Flatware


During the early years of the Jensen silversmithy,
European flatware production was dominated
by a modernist aesthetic that embraced generic forms
and tended to be mechanically mass produced.

In contrast, Jensen's flatware designs were highly individualistic,
designed for function with beauty.

Jensen’s first flatware pattern, called Antik in Danish
(and Continental in English), was introduced in 1906.

It has a relatively simple, restrained design characterized
by surface hammering and simple, decorative grooves and notches.

It was probably inspired by traditional Nordic wooden utensils,
in particular a wooden spoon that was given to Jensen’s wife
when she was a child.

Jensen’s borrowing from vernacular design is not surprising;
apparently endeavoring to attract middle-class Danish customers,
he fashioned a conservative design that would be familiar.
